The Hubbard soccer team is off to their best start in program history. The Eagles are undefeated though 11 games and ranked 7th in the State in Division 2.
The Eagles are led by senior captain Mikey VanSuch, who’s been an All-County player since his freshman year. Plus, Mikey’s a straight-A student, and now, our “33 Student Athlete of the Week.”
“I’m a nice guy…happy talkative outside of the field, but when it comes to game time, it’s all business,” said VanSuch. “I’m there to win.”
Mikey is a four-year starter and three-year captain for the the Eagles. He’s scored seven career goals but is better known for setting up his teammates.
“I love to pass the ball to my teammates,” said VanSuch.
“I love sharing the wealth passing it to each other. to me, chemistry plays a lot bigger role than the talent on the team. When you know your teammates to the heart, you can go a long way in the season.”
Off the field, Mikey ranks first in his class with a 4.0 GPA and on track be valedictorian. Plus, he’s a member of many school clubs, and serves as Senior Class Treasurer.
“Grades are everything, they set up your entire life,” he said. “Sports, soccer, I’ll have this for the next few years but grades are going to set up my entire future. They’re going to set up what I do for the rest of my life.”
Speaking of Mikey’s future, he was inspired to enter the Sports Medicine Field after suffering a severe concussion at the end of last season.
“A lot of the injuries that I dealt with, they were really hard for me to get through,” said VanSuch. “But with the personality I have, I love to help people and if I can give back to others what they did to me, that would be a life long goal of mine.”
