Youngstown, OH (WYTV) – Mooney’s Jaclyn Yankle is a two sport standout for the Cardinals, racking up 7 varsity letters in basketball and volleyball. She’s also a straight A student, and is competitive at whatever she does.
“I like to win,” said Yankle. “I always like to get better, to push myself to be the best I can be.”
Whether it’s volleyball or basketball, Jaclyn loves to compete. Earlier this season, she eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark. She averages 19 points and 10 rebounds this season, while serving as captain the past two years.
“I would say I would lead more by example,” she said. “Not as much by what I say but more as I do, and I think others follow by that.”
That example helped Mooney defeat rival Ursuline twice this season, including Wednesday in the sectional tournament. Jaclyn scored 31 points, helping the Cardinals advance past the first round for the first time in her four years.
“That was one of my goals, was to get a win over them and to make it past the first round of the tournament. And it just worked out nice that we play Ursuline too so I could accomplish both at once.”
Jaclyn’s goals are just as high in the classroom, where she carries a 4.1 GPA and is a member of the National Honor’s Society.
“I was always taught growing up that school always comes first, then sports,” she said. “So you just have to have time management to do both.”
Jaclyn plans to take her work ethic and play basketball in college, but she still has one more goal before she leaves Mooney.
“I mean, a district title would be nice for basketball,” said Yankle. “And if our team works hard through the tournament, I definitely think we can get there.”
