Warren, OH (WYTV) – Harding’s Emily Thirion is an All State and All American swimmer for the Raiders, racking up four varsity letters and setting four school records. Not only that, but her accolades outside the pool are equally as impressive, making her a perfect fit for our Student Athlete of the Week.

“Swimming involves a lot of drive,” said Thirion. “So you have to constantly tell yourself…this lap’s gonna be my best lap, this race is gonna be my best race. This practice is gonna be my best practice. So I think my overall dedication to the sport has really been the difference.”

Emily has been swimming since she was 6 years old. Now, 12 years later, she leaves Harding as one of the most decorated swimmers in school history.

“It really tests you both mentally and physically and that definitely carries over into the classroom and just life in general,” said Thirion. “You have to be committed to really stick with it.”

Emily’s work ethic has set the bar high at Harding, where she carries a 4.2 GPA and is President of National Honor’s Society. So how does she balance it all?

“Time management is really key to be a successful student and a successful swimmer,” she said. “Our coaches are really great about making sure that we are staying on our studies and we don’t slack. But really, pool time is pool time and school time is school time.”

But despite all that she has going on, Emily always finds time for the water.

“Honestly when you dive in, it’s a world all its own,” said Thirion. “You feel quiet, you feel relaxed, especially if you’ve had a stressful day at home or at school.”

Emily plans to continue her academic and swimming career at Duquesne University next fall, but for now, she plans on enjoying the rest of her senior year.

“I made some great memories. I love my coaches and I love my team. But i’m sure that the legacy I’ve left here will speak for itself and I hope that they carry that with them.”
