Berlin Center, OH (WYTV) – When it comes to competing, Western Reserve’s Aleah Hughes has a passion like few others. She’s racked up 11 varsity letters in three different sports for the Blue Devils, and set the bar high both in and out of the classroom., earning her the honor of our Student Athlete of the Week.
“I’m not the most vocal person and so I kind of try to lead by what I do,” said Hughes. “I love to win, and playing in games, it’s just fun for me.”
Aleah is always on the go, and always competing. She’s an All League and All State athlete in softball, basketball, and volleyball…but one sport has always stood above the rest.
“My mom was always coaching volleyball, so as a kid I was always around the sport and I just love the game and how it’s played,” said Hughes. “I usually play all year around…at school and my club. I never get sick of it and it’s something that I love to do.”
Aleah recorded over 11 hundred kills and a thousand digs in her high school career…but her mark of a 4.0 GPA is equally as important to her.
“School definitely comes first,” she said. “My parents always taught me…you’re a student athlete, not an athlete-student. So keeping my grades up is always my majority.”
Aleah will graduate as co-valedictorian, and is a member of the National Honor’s Society. She’ll attend YSU next fall and walk on for the volleyball team, while working towards a degree in Exercise Science.
“I’m definitely excited to move on to college, but then again, I’m not wishing away any of these days in high school. I don’t want to graduate yet,” said Hughes. “I would definitely say, don’t take anything for granted. It goes by so fast. Just keep doing whatever you can to get better and always keep your grades up in school and things will work out for you.”
