Record-breaking night for Trimmer, West Branch

Beloit, OH (WYTV) – And the beat goes on. The West Branch Lady Warriors wasted little time in disposing the Hubbard Lady Eagles Thursday night 91-25, capturing a sectional title in Division II tournament action.

The win advances the Warriors to the district semi-finals on Monday at Austintown Fitch.The victory pushes the Warriors record to 23-1 on the season, and will pit them against the Southeast Pirates in a 6:00PM contest. But clearly on Thursday night the Warriors were focused squarely on just getting the job done against the Eagles first.

“That was just a dominating performance,” Warriors Coach Walt DeShields remarked. “This team is real, real hungry to dominate their opponents. They are at that point of the season where it is one game and out.”

“We realized that this is our time right now,” senior guard Trimmer added. “We had a wake up call at practice. We had a tough practice so we talked it out and decided that we were going to come out and don’t want anyone to stop us. So we are going to go as hard as we can.

The Warriors seized control of the game right from the opening tip off as they forced the Eagles to commit 13 first quarter turnovers helping to propel them to a 28-2 lead after just one period of play. On the night, the Eagles would turn the ball 29 times and trail 56-9 at the halftime break.

But for the Warrior senior players, it was the last time they will play on their home court, something that they treasured. “It definitely hit me right at the end of warm ups,” Trimmer said. “Just knowing what I have been through with these fellow seniors and coaches. It’s been really special for us. We’ve had some great memories out here. It’s really sad, but it’s great knowing that we are just starting our tournament run.”

“These four seniors are pretty special. They are 44-1 here, that’s their final record. It’s pretty emotional, I saw some tears when the game started and I also saw some tears at the end of the game,” DeShields said of Trimmer, Pavin Heath, Erica Johnson, and Lea Brock.

In the process of the victory the Warriors set several team and individual records including the 91 points scored broke the 90 points that they set against Alliance earlier this year. Trimmer also had 17 assist which set a school record in a game and she broke a single season record of 216. She has 754 career assist which is fourth on the all-Ohio list.

Pavin Heath hit two three pointers in the game which breaks her former record. Two years ago she had 48, but now has 50 on this season.

“Honestly, this team is not about records,” DeShields remarked. “If it was, we could have left some starters in longer and got them point records and all kind of things. But it’s not about that. I think this team understands to respect their opponents.”

Trimmer would also score a game-high 17 points to lead the eleven players that they put in the scorebook. Heath added 16 and 10 rebounds while Kaylee Manning and Catie Hahn each scored 12. Erica Johnson would grab 7 rebounds and 10 steals, with Vernice Ormiston securing 6 rebounds.

Emily Manion led the Eagles with 12 points in the game including three baskets from behind the arc. Michelle Peachock would haul down 8 rebounds.

The Eagles close the season with a 7-15 record.
