Youngstown, OH (WYTV) – The Panthers have practically wiped the slates clean after a 2-8 season, with just 4 returning starters, as they look to rebuild for the future.
Head Coach P.J. Mays is back for a third season with the Panthers and despite the lack of experience, he’s excited about this group. They have around 60 players and return 3 starters on offense, led by Imoni Donadelle at wide receiver. The quarterback spot is still up for grabs. Senior linebacker Tabrian Donlow is the only returner on defense but should be a menace in the middle with 12 sacks last year. Newcomer Chris Fitzgerald is also one to keep your eye on in the trenches. Mays says he’s one of the best freshmen in the area, as the Panthers hope to make up for their lack of experience with toughness.
“It’s a blessing and a curse…we’re very inexperienced but at the same time these guys bring a clean slate to us as far as our coaching staff,” said Mays. “We get a chance to mold these guys. We got a great group of young men and we’re trying to turn those young men into football players.”
“I think we’re very motivated,” said Donlow. ‘[Players] are dedicated, very motivated. [Players] have got stronger and stuff. They [are] ready for this year. They want to prove everybody wrong.”
