LIBERTY, OH (WYTV)-It has been an interesting off-season for the Liberty Leopards. Alum Chet Allen took over for Kevin Cylar as head coach this spring and has multiple holes to fill in the lineup that not only saw players graduate, but leave to other schools.
The Leopards leading passer and rusher Lynn Bowden has departed to Warren Harding, and just a few weeks ago Brandon Rios, who was supposed to fill the void left by Bowden, left to go to Hubbard.
But Allen isn’t worried about the players that aren’t there and says that this year it is about getting back to a team game, and his players are hearing the message.
“We’ve just gotta keep it rolling. We just gotta keep it moving. It’s just a small piece missing. We’re just gonna have to recover from it,” says running back Branden Smith.
“Our chip on our shoulder is for everybody to come together, play as a team, show that it’s everybody in this together. Not just one person,” said safety Kaylon Davis.
The Leopards do return four starters on offense and four on defense led by senior JaShaun Whitman who led the team in tackles and sacks a year ago.
“I think this group, the last four weeks has been nothing but work ethic. Since I have taken the job and the guys showing up in the weight room, the guys putting the time in on the track, and on the field,” says Allen.
Liberty will open the year August 28th at home against Struthers
