CANFIELD, OH (WYTV)-It has been since 2009 that Canfield reached the postseason in a decade that saw 9 winning seasons in ten years, but the Cardinals most recent winning season was 2011 (6-4), although the team believes they have the talent to return to Week 11 in 2015.
Canfield returns six starters on offense and five on defense in head coach Mike Pavlansky’s 15th season in charge at Canfield.
“They want to try to get back to playing game 11 but they know their first 10 games are most important, you are guaranteed 10 and we will see where we are in November,” said Pavlansky.
Jacob Esarco returns for his senior season at Canfield. The big lineman led the team in tackles last season with 102, six of those were behind the line of scrimmage.
Which quarterback Esarco will be blocking for Week 1 remains a question. Camp will decide who is the signal caller with a battle featuring senior Kato Kim and junior Jake Cummings.
The Cardinals believe that they are close to getting over the hump and making the postseason, but to do that, they want to limit mistakes in close games.
“Coach Pavlanksy always says that the games we lost last year are not because of effort or physicality because we have that. It is more the little things, getting the little things right and finishing games,” said Esarco
“Work on the little things that they need to get better at. If they do those things that will give us a chance to win on Friday nights and that is all you can ask,” says Pavlansky.
Canfield will open the season on the road at Louisville August 28th.
