SHARPSVILLE, Pa. (WYTV) – In Mercer County Tuesday morning, the top of a large, old tree came crashing down onto an SUV driving by. A girl inside the vehicle was injured and taken to the hospital.
Hazen Road in Sharpsville, near Buhl Park, was closed while crews worked to remove branches and fix power lines that were scattered across the road.
“It split away from what I call the yolk of the tree,” said David DeForest.
The tree was in DeForest’s front yard.
The treetop hit an SUV as it was heading toward Forker Boulevard. The young girl was in the back seat.
“The little girl was nicked up a little bit. I know she was bleeding pretty good from her leg. I don’t know if it was glass or what but they got the bleeding stopped,” DeForest said.
DeForest said he was asleep when the tree fell just before 9 a.m. and woke up to his neighbor knocking on the door.
He said he doesn’t know what exactly caused it to break since it was a calm morning.
“It’s an older tree and you know, there might have been a crack a couple days ago. We did have a pretty good lightning strike through here,” DeForest said.
The tree knocked out power to the neighborhood. Penn Power crews hope to have it back up and running by the end of the day.
