BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) – A Boardman woman is in the Mahoning County Jail after police said she stole checks from her mother and used the money to buy drugs.
Jessica R. Powers, 23, of Cathy Ann Drive, was arrested Thursday on warrants charging her with forgery and receiving stolen property. She is being held at the Mahoning County Jail on $5,000 bond and is due back in court on Wednesday.
According to a police report, a woman came to the Boardman Police Department on March 19 and told police her daughter, Powers, stole her checks and cashed them. She said her bank account was overdrawn and she discovered six checks missing from her checkbook.
The woman said she checked her account online and two of the checks were cashed on March 16 and one was cashed on March 17. The other three also were cashed but she was unable to see the images to see when they were cashed. She told police she recognized the handwriting on the endorsed check images as her daughter’s, according to the police report.
The woman told police after an argument over drug use, Powers left the house with her 3-year-old son. The woman said she became concerned for her grandson’s well-being and on March 19, she drove past the house of her other daughter and Powers’ vehicle was there.
Police said they will forward the police report to Mahoning County Children’s Services in regard to the woman’s grandson. She told police he has lived with her since he was born and she would be willing to take temporary custody of him if needed, the police report states.
The woman told police Powers has stolen from her in the past, but she never filed a police report before because her daughter is addicted to heroin. She said she wanted to pursue criminal charges this time, because she is hoping it will push Powers to get help for her addiction.
