DETROIT, Mich. (WYTV) – The auto industry is putting on its best face in Detroit over the next two weeks for the North American International Auto Show and technology is playing a big part in shaping the industry’s future.
Some of the new cars unveiled at the Cobo Center are the Buick Avenier concept car and the new 2016 Buick Cascada convertible. It is the first compact convertible for the car company in 25 years.
“We are really excited about this. It is going to be fun to see how younger people come to the brand as they have been doing for the last few years,” Michelle Stys, assistant marketing manager for Buick Cascada, said.
At Dodge, the old is new again where the age of the muscle car is back in the Dodge Challenger HellCat.
“You are going to need some of the key statures, some of the styling cues from that era today. You got the same split-haired grill from the 1971 Challenger as well as the race track tail lamps, but a modern interpretation of LED lighting, which Dodge is known for,” Bob Broderdorf, head of Dodge brand cars, said.
It also features a throwback interior with a modern overtone. And unlike the 70’s car, technology has helped Dodge improve gas mileage.
“Technology is a big part of it. Things like advanced Powertrain 8-speed transmissions, latest in technology as far as air flow aerodynamics, all of that plays a part in delivering great horsepower and great gas mileage,” Broderdorf said.
Technology is also helping people become connected through their smartphones without even having to get inside the car. At Ford, they are testing out a pilot program on beacons.
“Imagine you want to look at the vehicle but the dealership is closed. It’s Saturday, it’s Sunday, You’re out with your friends, it’s after hours, but you still want to know about a car. With this technology, you can go on a lot, walk around and learn about the vehicle yourself,” Ford Motor Co. software engineer Reggie McCray said.
The Auto Show opens to the public on Saturday.
