AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Potholes seem to be an ongoing problem, even as crews work to fill them.

Concerned Citizens of Meander Cove in Austintown are upset over the number of potholes on North Turner Road from Mahoning Avenue heading north to Meander Cove and beyond. In a letter to Mahoning County Engineer Pat Ginnetti, they claim a small attempt was made to fix the road, but it is still hazardous.

Vince Vargo lives in the neighborhood and like many drivers, he has to slow down considerably.

“I gear my car down to first gear and go about 10 miles an hour and it is kind of just like riding the wave until you can get off of it,” Vargo saod.So far this year, the engineer’s office has received 1,700 complaints about road issues, including potholes.

“If we were to respond to every one of those calls individually, we would be bouncing around and we would never finish roads,” Ginnetti said.

Ginnetti said his crews have been out 10 times to work their way up North Turner Road to fill the potholes.

“I have seen them and I walk every day and I don’t think I have seen them more than two times putting cold patch in there,” Vargo said.

Ginnetti said with only 3,000 drivers a day on North Turner, it is less of a priority for the county compared to 5,000 to 7,000 drivers on nearby Norquest Boulevard or 13,000 to 30,000 drivers on Mahoning Avenue.

“We always look at the level one roads first, the roads that have the highest volume of traffic. Those are more prone to more accidents, because there are more cars on them, so unfortunately, we are not ignoring the lesser traveled roads but we have to prioritize those roads first,” Ginnetti said.

Steady rains this week may make the job of those filling potholes more difficult.
