VIENNA, Ohio (WYTV) – The Mathews Local School District Board of Education voted Wednesday to reinstate math teacher Adam Brown following an hour-long executive session.
Brown has been on paid administrative leave for the past year. A previous review indicated more than 50 percent of students were struggling in his class and were earning low marks through the end of the school year. .
In April 2013, the board began Brown’s termination process, following what it claimed were numerous complaints from students and parents about Brown’s teaching tactics and interactions with students.
Many supporters and non-supporters came to Wednesday’s meeting. One supporter was retired Mathews English teacher Sandra Webber.
“When we taught with him, he was an individual who always cared about the students, took time to help them when anyone went in and asked for help,” Webber said.
Brown began working for the district in 2008. Two years into his tenure, his evaluations were good. However, in 2013 his reviews soured.
Some of his students also supported him.
“If students asked him for help, he helped. But there is always students who don’t care and he wouldn’t go out of his way if they didn’t ask for help,” senior Ashley Hannah said following the meeting.
Webber said she thought Brown deserved some type of compensation other than being reinstated.
“The unfair treatment of him, the hardship and the heartache that this board has caused his family, that needs some type of restitution,” she said.
Brown will be reinstated effective March 30.
