AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Austintown Police Department has turned to the Marines for its latest recruit to the police force.
Sgt. Todd Schuller was sworn in as a police officer during the township meeting on Monday. The Mooney graduate was hired as part of a federal grant.
The grant requires the officer to be a military veteran who served overseas. Schuller joined the Marines eight years ago and served one tour in Afghanistan.
“I joined while I was in college. Joined the Marine Corps Reserves and the reason why I did that I really wanted to serve my country after 9-11. Military service was something that I really admired,” Schuller said.
Schuller is part of a Reserve unit based in Canton. He also is a Marine recruiter.
Austintown Township trustees also swore in three reserve police officers at the meeting.
