YSU to deliver ‘Rock the Dome’ in 4K video

Local News

It’s been a big week in the sky. First, a lunar eclipse that came with a supermoon bonus and more spectacles are coming this weekend.

The YSU Ward Beecher Planetarium is holding its Rock the Dome weekend.  It’s a light show combined with rock music from groups like The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Rush.

The planetarium used to run a laser light show, but it has a new system now that brings the stars to light, combined with great music – all in 4K video.

“We have a system that does visualizations to dance the music instead of using lasers. So, it’s like our laser shows but new and improved,” said Curt Spivey, planetarium engineer and producer.

The one-hour shows are every hour from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. There are also two matinees on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

There are 145 seats in the planetarium and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
