Kids lined up one by one, got sized up, and they picked out a color and style

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A handful of Youngstown’s finest played Santa Claus Wednesday morning for a group of school children — just in time for the holidays.

Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, police officers passed out a hundred brand new winter coats to students at Taft Elementary on the south side.

Kids lined up one by one, got sized up and picked out a color and style.

It was a team effort of Youngstown’s Community Policing Unit and leaders with the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence (CIRV).

“We want our kids to be successful and basic needs are serious,” said Guy Burney, CIRV director. “The ability to have food, the ability to be warm and so we’re just trying to meet a need so these kids can get what they need and be successful.”

They also passed coats out to a number of community centers in the city.
