There was some recognition Tuesday night for Youngstown property owners. Youngstown CityScape gave out their annual beautification awards.
They go to homeowners, businesses, and community organizations who go above and beyond improving their properties.
Theresa Moon is proud of her house. She’s one of a dozen recipients of Youngstown CityScape’s Beautification Awards, but to her, her property’s more than just nice to look at. It tells a story.
“In 1988 my father found the house and had the opportunity to buy it and he paid less than $5,000 for it,” Moon said.
From there, her father gutted it, remodeled everything and added onto it.
“My dad had a vision, he was the kind of person that could take things and make something out of them,” she said.
Even after he lost his job in the steel mills, he kept working on the house.
“It kind of taught me the principles of resilience. You know you don’t give up. You keep going,” Moon said.
A lesson Moon is using to this day.
Her father passed away in 2015. Now she has moved into the house and continues to keep it up to date.
“I’m proud of my home. My dad was very proud of his home. And it’s an honor to maintain it in his memory,” she said.
Moon says getting an award that recognizes her work is just the cherry on top.
