YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Youngstown City Schools revealed their 2016 Teacher of the Year on Tuesday.
Cindy Johnson received the special honor at the Discovery Program at Kirkmere, where she teaches 6th grade. A total of 15 teachers were nominated.
She said she has come a long way.
“Almost 11 years ago I was diagnosed with cancer, so I thought my life was over, I thought I was dying. And here I am 11 years later, getting this award for being the teacher of the year so this is a blessing and an exciting time in my life,” Johnson said.
She has been teaching for 15 years and was nominated for the award by her principal.
She now will compete to be named Ohio Teacher of the Year.
