YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Pushing students to reach their full potential was the goal of the Youngstown Board of Education on Monday.
Teachers, principals and administrators came to learn more about MindUP, a program created by actress Goldie Hawn and neuroscientists.
The research-based training program for educators and children is composed of 15 lessons based in neuroscience, designed to foster a classroom environment where a child’s ability to academically succeed is linked to their overall state of well-being. According to the Hawn Foundation, the program has proven to reduce stress, improve academic performance and strengthen abilities for concentration.
Congressman Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, supports the program and wants to bring it to Youngstown. According to the program’s website, it has been used in schools in Akron, Painesville and Middlefield.
Warren City Schools also have a similar program in place, and there has been 60 percent reduction in out-of-school suspensions.
“As Youngstown is going through a lot of transition, we want to make sure that they have access to all of the cutting-edge programs that are happening in the country to really help rebuild and transform the school district, and we are not going to settle for anything less,” Ryan said.
He adds that emotional well-being is an important part of the learning process.
“If a kid is not emotionally balanced and healthy and can regulate their own emotions, then they can’t learn, and I think we too often go right into the learning without appreciating this as a human being,” he said.
