WARREN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WYTV) – A 15-year-old who died Monday after being shot in the head by a family member over the weekend has been identified as Jesse Hayes, 15, of Parma, according to Warren Township Police Chief Don Bishop.
Bishop said the incident happened just before 11 p.m. Saturday at a home on Ruth Avenue. Bishop said the teen’s cousin was showing him a new shotgun and pointed it at the teen when the gun went off.
Earlier reports said the shooter was the victim’s uncle, but Bishop said it is actually his cousin, according to family members. The cousin told police he did not know the shotgun was loaded and he is cooperating in the investigation.
Bishop said he is waiting for autopsy results from the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office. He also said he is waiting on lab results from a gunshot residue test and a toxicology report.
Once the coroner rules on a manner of death and the test results are in, Bishop said he will consult with the Trumbull County Prosecutor to determine what charges, if any, should be filed.
