WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – Warren police are now working to piece together what led to a shooting that killed a man in the 100 block of Maryland Street NE Tuesday night.

“I didn’t see no car so he, whoever did it, got away real quick,” said George Bossard, who lives nearby.

Police say they found one man dead at the scene. He had been shot in the back.

Police in the area heard gunshots around 8:30 p.m. and started trying to figure out where they came from when someone called 911 to report a man had been shot at the end of a driveway.

This murder makes 2020 the deadliest year for the city in recent history.

People who live on Maryland Street say the neighborhood is typically very quiet, so what happened on Tuesday is out of the ordinary.

Dispatcher: “Trumbull 911, where is your emergency?”
Caller: “Yes uh, um, we just heard some gunshots.”

“It went bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. I said oh no, that ain’t no firecrackers,” Bossard said.

Bossard lives across the street from where officers found the victim.

The victim hasn’t been positively identified by the coroner’s office yet, but investigators say the man was shot multiple times.

“I don’t know if it was a drive-by or somebody just ran away, but it’s a sad story when you hear this kind of stuff going on in the area, especially in a neighborhood like this,” Bossard said.

“This is the 14th homicide we’ve had in the City of Warren. It’s the highest in at least 20 years, perhaps more,” said Lt. Bryan Holmes, Warren Police Department.

At this point, detectives are still trying to determine a motive and identify any possible suspects in the case.

“We’re in the process of working on that, we do have leads to follow up on,” Holmes said.

“I hope they catch the guy that did it because it’s very, very, very unholy to go around shooting people,” Bossard said.

Investigators ask anyone who may have heard or seen anything to come forward with that information.
