UPDATE: Warren police officers met with school leaders on Friday. “The discussion at our meeting today with the police union officials went well. I believe we are working together in a positive direction to achieve a common goal,” Superintendent Steve Chiaro said. The police union said it was a productive meeting.
Police and school administrators are fighting over parking in Warren City Schools. The dispute is over the no parking zone between two handicapped parking spaces.
At Jefferson K-8 School in Warren, parking spots closest to the door fill up quickly.
The city police union said one handicapped parking zone in particular is causing a problem.
Illegal parking has been a problem at Jefferson School for a long time. Earlier this week, city police decided they’d had enough.
Officer Adam Chinchic said he saw a car parking repeatedly in a handicapped zone. He discovered the car belonged to the school principal.
Police union representative Michael Stabile said after warnings, Chinchic wrote a ticket.
That’s when problems started.
“A citation was issued to the vehicle for the handicapped parking violation. Within one hour, the superintendent had ordered two administrators to go to Jefferson and escort the SRO off the property,” said Michael Stabile, with the Warren police union.
That left the school without a police officer on campus during the day.
“The union and the police administration, we’re still in conversation as to how we’re going to proceed forward to get a school resource officer in that school,” Stabile said.
A school spokesperson said the district employee moved the vehicle when asked.
Stabile said Chinchic may return as a school officer at another building.
“At this point, he doesn’t want to go back to that school because of how the situation unfolded.”
