WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — Hundreds of children are now ready to start the school year thanks to the Warren Family Mission’s annual backpack distribution.

That giveaway was held Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Mission on Tod Avenue Northwest.

At the start of the giveaway, a line of people wrapped around the building. More than 400 backpacks filled with school supplies were handed out.

Hope Parks’ daughter Cherish is entering the second grade. Parks says she’s thankful for the mission’s backpack giveaway.

“I am so grateful. It’s a blessing because it’s been hard for me as a single mother. I am doing everything myself, so I can use any help that I can and I’m just grateful for it,” she said.

Dominic Mararri with the Warren Family Mission says they had a bigger than expected turnout. He says next year, they’ll plan to give away 500 to 600 bookbags.

WKBN/WYTV helped collect donations for this year’s giveaway. It was all a part of our Founders Day of Caring.

“WKBN stepped, really helped out. Our community saw that after you guys ran your stories and they came in and donated the supplies necessary so we can make this event possible for families,” Mararri said.
