SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – Voters in Salem voted against a bond issue and levy for a new school building.
The property tax levy would have raised just under $20 million for a proposed Pre-K-8 building. The state would have paid the remaining $38 million.
Just over 55% of voters were against the levy, according to unofficial returns.
The district wants to tear down both Reilly and Buckeye Elementary schools and repurpose Southeast. Their plan was to build the new school on vacant land near Southeast.
Austin Fredrickson, chair of the Levy Committee, said they’re disappointed by the results.
“We’ll be asking the school board to give us some direction about the future options for our school and for our students,” he said.
School officials had 13 months to secure the local share of the funding.
