The Trumbull County coroner has ruled the death of Matthew Burroughs a homicide.
Burroughs was killed by Niles police on January 2 in his car near the Royal Mall Apartments on Vienna Avenue.
The coroner determined Burroughs died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
Police said Burroughs was at Niles Municipal Court on Wednesday when staff learned he had a warrant for assault and menacing charges.
Police said when the probation officer tried to arrest Burroughs in court on Wednesday, he took off, hitting the officer with the door of the car as he drove away.
Officers later showed up outside of his apartment, where the shooting took place.
The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is putting together what led up to the shooting.
BCI has already said Burroughs did not have a gun on him at the time of the shooting.
BCI’s findings will be turned over to the prosecutor’s office once the investigation is complete.
