Theft charge does not stick for Columbiana jeweler

Local News

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A Mahoning County grand jury has failed to indict a Columbiana County jewelry store owner on a theft charge.

William Kimpel, 55, owner of Kimpel’s Jewelry & Gifts in the Columbiana Plaza, had been arrested in November on the felony theft charge after police said he failed to pay for a diamond ring. But the grand jury “no billed” the case, meaning they did not feel there was enough evidence to justify a trial.

Police previously said Kimpel took a diamond ring appraised at $15,000 on consignment. The owner of the ring said Kimpel sold the ring, but never gave him the money for it.

Kimpel responded to the allegation, saying the sale of the ring had not been completed yet and the person he was helping was complaining about how long the process took with their retail buyer. He said the customer’s lawyer made a complaint to appease her and to put pressure on Kimpel.
