YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – While the frigid weather is pushing everyone indoors, one local shelter is worried its old building will prevent it from helping people without a home.

The Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley in Youngstown is expecting a surge of people looking to get out of the cold.

It prepared the outside of its building Wednesday with metal cages to keep the slate roof from falling off.

Workers said they’re in desperate need of a new facility. It’s one of the many reasons why they’ve started a campaign to “Move Our Mission.”

“We have to go. We can’t wait any longer,” Jim Echement said .

The number of people the organization helps continues to grow.

“Winter’s upon us, the temperature’s dropping, the wind’s picking up and, yes, we’re seeing an increase in people,” Echement said.

The Warren Family Mission is also ready for the crowd expected overnight and into the season.

“With the winter ahead, you know we’re going to see an increase in numbers,” Dominic Mararri said.

Inside the Warren Family Mission Men’s Facility off W. Market Street, there were cots ready and coffee brewed on Wednesday.

“It’s not safe to be out there, so we want everyone to have somewhere to go,” said Brad Moore, Director of Men’s Services. “We have food, we have clothing, we have hats, gloves, hand warmers, hygiene items.”

Moore said the Mission provides all of that for free.

“We’re able to provide…a safe environment and a warm place to stay, 24 hours a day.”

The Rescue Mission is accepting donations and pledges to raise money for a new building. To help, fill out an online donation form or send money to:
