NEW CASTLE, Pa. (WYTV) – Local and state police, along with Lawrence County District Attorney Joshua Lamancusa, gathered Thursday afternoon at the Lawrence County Courthouse to lay out the chain of events that led up to a police officer shooting a man along I-376 in Union Township.

Police confirmed earlier reports of a traffic stop going awry early Tuesday morning in Shenango Township where officers attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by 34-year-old Shawn Hobel.

The vehicle Hobel was driving matched the description of one that was involved in a robbery at a local convenient store earlier that night, according to Lamancusa.

When police tried to pull Hobel over, he took off. That started a police chase through Butler and Lawrence counties where New Castle police and troopers with Pennsylvania State Police got involved to assist.

Police were able to finally block Hobel’s vehicle on I-376. Dash cam video shows officers surrounding the car. Lamancusa said the first thing officers saw when they approached the vehicle was Hobel holding a gun to a woman’s head who was in the car with him.

“Mr Hobel began saying I’m going to kill her. I’m going to kill you, and that is when the officer pulled the trigger,” Lamancusa said.

Several shots were fired by a police officer with the New Castle Police Special Response Team. Some of those shots went through the front windshield of the car, hitting Hobel in the abdomen.

The woman was then rescued from the vehicle.

Hobel is being treated at St. Elizabeth Hospital for his injuries.

No officers were hurt.

Hobel is facing several charges, including illegal possession of a weapon, aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, unlawful restraint, assault, recklessly endangering another person, fleeing and eluding a police officer, and careless and reckless driving.

He’s been arrested before for harassment, theft and robbery. The woman in the car told police that Hobel was involved in armed robberies in Lawrence County as well.
