EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WKBN) – The voters have spoken in East Palestine’s mayoral race.
Incumbent Trent Conaway won the vote by 56.69%, according to unofficial returns.
He ran against Misti Allison, who has also been vocal about the East Palestine train derailment.
“It was a trying six months there. I hadn’t decided if I was going to run or not,” Conaway said. “My family had been through a lot. Me, personally, I had been through a lot. We lost some family members, I lost my job, so we were dealing with quite a few things.”
This is Conaway’s second term as mayor. He says he is a Republican.
Conaway plans to continue the clean-up efforts from the derailment. He would like to attract more residents and businesses into the village by cleaning up some of the blighted buildings in the village.
“I needed to finish what I started. The residents voted me in for a reason and I want to finish that,” he said.
Conaway also wanted to thank East Palestine residents for passing the fire levy after what first responders went through during the derailment.
