POLAND, Ohio (WYTV) – The rich history of the Mahoning Valley undoubtedly includes the mafia.
On Tuesday, author Allan May visited Shepherd of the Valley in Poland to speak about organized crime in the region.
May has written five books on the topic, two involving Mahoning Valley. He said crime and political corruption are still around and may never go away.
“But the organized crime as you knew it, and it’s referred to a lot as the mafia, that’s pretty much been wiped out,” May said. “There might be a few old, initiated members still around, but you certainly don’t have the structure that you did in years past.”
May’s talk was part of the Beaver Township Police Department’s crime watch meeting.
His next book will be a sequel to “Crimetown U.S.A.,” a narrative of organized crime in Youngstown and the surrounding Mahoning Valley during the years 1933 to 1963. The book was published in 2013.
May said he believes people are fascinated with the mob, because it is part of the culture here.
