NILES, Ohio (WYTV) – Niles Police Chief Robert Hinton submitted a letter of resignation to Mayor Tom Scarnecchia on Monday.

The letter states that Hinton will retire as chief effective Thursday.

In part, it reads:

Being the Police Chief for the City of Niles has been the highlight of my police career and one that I will cherish for years to come.

I believe I leave you with well-trained supervisors who can lead this department to the next level, and a command staff that is prepared to make the critical decisions that best serve this community and the department.

Niles is on a rebound and will once again be a thriving community during your leadership. The Niles Police Department has worked hard to earn respect and will always stand ready to serve.

Hinton has been part of the Niles Police Department for 32 and a half years.

He has been on sick leave since the beginning of this year. Officer Jay Holland has been acting police chief since then.
