Niles mayor holding comments on officer-involved shooting until after BCI report

Local News

The mayor of Niles says, like everyone else, he has questions about the fatal officer-involved shooting of a city man last week.

Matthew Burroughs died after he was shot several times by Niles police officers trying to arrest him. The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation has taken over the case.

Niles Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz says it could take months for the investigation to be completed, but that it’s important to wait until all the facts are known.

“I think everyone wants an answer and we are just waiting on that information right now,” he said.

The mayor says he won’t be meeting with anyone or saying much about the case until BCI’s report is done.

Mientkiewicz says his thoughts are with everyone involved in the case.
