First Step detox facility in Warren_34667

WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – For the first time in 20 years, a detox facility is going to be opening up in Warren to treat those with addiction.

First Step Recovery, a 16-bed detox facility, will be located on Youngstown Road S.E.

In just the past week alone in Warren, there have been at least three overdose deaths, including a 28-year-old resident who was found at a home on High Street Tuesday morning.

Trumbull County Coroner Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk said 54 people overdosed last year, many of them from heroin, or a mixture of drugs. That number is up from 39 in 2013.

“It might not be as vicious or as brutal as a shootout in the middle of the street at high noon, but it does have its subtle effects on family, on co-workers, on children and on parents,” said Tom Dailey, co-owner of First Step Recovery.

To help combat the severe drug problem in the Valley, First Step will offer clients help in the initial stages of getting clean from drugs. Being a recovery addict himself, Dailey knows the day-to-day struggle.

“It is really crucial that they know the people helping them have walked in their shoes. That is something I don’t mind sharing. It is my life mission,” Dailey said.

When First Step opens, 10 percent of the 150 people on a waiting list to get into a detox program will get the help they need, but there those that must still wait. Executive Director Jeff Sanders says it could take between four to six weeks to get into the program.

“When people have to wait, they are already at wit’s end. There is a likelihood that they are going to increase their criminal activity to continue to treat their symptoms and try to avoid getting sick,” Sanders said.

First Step Recovery will accept private insurance as well as Medicaid. The facility is scheduled to open by the end of April.
