BROOKFIELD, Ohio (WYTV) – Hundreds came out to get down and dirty for the second annual Mud Monster 5K at Yankee Lake Saturday morning.

Endurance and athletic abilities were challenged as competitors raced through a course of grimy mud and a series of man-made obstacles to reach the finish line.

Runners as young as five years old jumped in the mud for the great cause.

The event helped the United Ways of Trumbull and Mercer Counties give back to the community.

About 45 agencies will receive a portion of the funds raised by the mud run.

“With those 40 to 45 agencies are probably 70 programs under income, education and health, and we are lifting families out of poverty using those three pillars,” said Ginny Pasha, president of the United Way of Trumbull County.

A free t-shirt and goodie bag was given to the first 150 pre-registered participants.

Those who completed the course in its entirety also received a finisher’s medal.
