WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – A Masury woman accused of cruelty to animals had her pretrial Friday, after police initially charged her in mid-January.

Warren police said cell phone video showed Jessica Scharba, 26, slamming a kitten against a dresser and then throwing it at a window. Scharba entered a not guilty plea at her arraignment after being arrested.

Friday, a judge ordered a mental health evaluation to be performed on Scharba.

According to a police report, Scharba was charged with cruelty to animals after an altercation with her boyfriend.

Police were called about 3:30 a.m. Monday to a house in the 900 block of Fifth Street S.W. A man there said he and Scharba argued over her attempts to contact the Maury Povich show in order to “work on their relationship.”

The man tried to leave when Scharba blocked a doorway and began swinging her arms at him. The man began recording the altercation on his cell phone.

Police viewed the cell phone video which they say shows Scharba picking up a kitten and telling the man she will do anything to keep him from leaving. She then slams the kitten against a dresser several times and throws it at a window, according to the report.

After reviewing the cell phone and interviewing witnesses, police arrested Scharba and booked her into the Trumbull County Jail. She was later arraigned and assigned a $2,500 bond. A pre-trial is scheduled for February 20.

According to court documents, Scharba is not allowed to have contact with the kitten, named RaJay.
