YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A Mahoning County Sheriff’s van full of non-violent offenders was involved in an accident on Interstate 680 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office said about five people who were convicted of non-violent crimes had been picking up litter along the roadways as part of the Sheriff’s day program. They were riding in the van from the area when they were involved in what the Sheriff’s Office called a minor accident.

The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. near Ohio 711, and one lane of I-680 was backed up for some time until the scene was cleared.

Both vehicles were heading west on I-680 when the SUV struck the back of the van. Investigators said the driver of the SUV was following too closely to the other vehicle.

The driver of the van had only minor injuries. The five passengers were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital with minor injuries.
