Mahoning County Commissioners stand behind nurses at Northside

Local News

Unionized nurses at Northside Medical Center picked up a boost Thursday morning from Mahoning County Commissioners.

Members of the Youngstown General Duty Nurses Association have been negotiating with executives of Steward Health Care since last spring.

Although their current agreement had been set to expire at the end of June, both sides agreed to extend the terms through early August.

Thursday morning, Commissioners passed a resolution supporting the nurses’ position.

“We’re asking Steward for, you know, more help at the bedside with nurses, aides, transports. We need all those to take care of our patients in the Mahoning Valley,” said Union President Laurie Hornberger.

A statement from the Massachusettes-based healthcare firm says administrators are proud of the work that staff at Northside is doing for patients, and it looks forward to resuming negotiations later this month with the nurses’ union.
