YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A study is getting underway to determine how wages paid to local government workers compares with others in Mahoning County and around the region.

Mahoning County Commissioners agreed to hire a Florida consulting firm to perform the study on the county’s nearly 2,000-member workforce.

Commissioners say they and others had been talking about having the survey done for a number of years to compare wages here with other counties, as well as workers in different local departments who may perform similar jobs.

“Every department head and elected have been mentioning some type of a study like this, and they’ve all come to us and asked us to do something so that they can see what other areas, other government agencies are comparable to us.” said Mahoning County Commissioner Carol Righetti.

Commissioners stress the reason for the study is not to find reasons to cut salaries.

The survey should be complete in about six months.
