POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – On Thursday evening in Poland, community members came together to pay homage to World War II Veteran Dick McCarthy.

Outside of his bedroom window at the Inn at Poland Way, people lit candles, thanked him for his service and said goodbyes.

Jeff Vrabel, Jr. with the Sons of the American Legion organized the event and says McCarthy’s health is declining.

“We have to do better thanking them and honoring them. Veteran’s Day is coming up, November 11. Every day should be Veteran’s Day. Thank a veteran every single day. You see some guy walking around with a cap that says ‘veteran,’ walk up and say thank you,” Vrabel said.

McCarthy was stationed on the USS Blackfish during World War II. He was a motor machinist mate, responsible for helping to keep the ship running.
