YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley got a big donation on Thursday to help Valley kids live an active lifestyle.

To celebrate, the hospital held a special event at the Southside Academy Charter School in Youngstown.

Kohl’s presented a check for $188,000 to support its Fit and Healthy Kids program for grades three through six. The program is aimed at preventing childhood obesity by teaching proper nutrition and portion sizes, as well as encouraging physical activity.

Megan Palmer, youth fitness specialist at Akron Children’s Hospital, said living an active lifestyle is very important for children.

“One in three kids are obese in Ohio. We want to get the awareness out there and get them excited that physical activity isn’t just going outside and going for a run,” she said. “It’s having fun and moving and just getting them excited to go outside for a walk or play on the playground.”

Each student got a pedometer that they were asked to wear for 10 weeks to track steps taken toward walking goals set by each class.
