Investigators looking into how Liberty man got hurt and his home set on fire

When emergency crews arrived, they found the Liberty duplex filled with smoke

LIBERTY, Ohio (WYTV) - An elderly man remains in the hospital Wednesday, being treated for injuries he received inside his own home in Liberty.

Investigators are still actively looking into the case, trying to piece together exactly what happened inside of a duplex on Roosevelt Drive and how the man who lives there got hurt.

911 caller: "I wasn't sure what I was hearing and then I heard it plain. He's yelling for help."

Officers responded to the home on Monday around 7 p.m. to check on the man after his neighbors heard him screaming.

Dispatcher: "Did he say what he needs help with?"

911 caller: "He said somebody threw a fireball at him and he can't breathe."

When emergency responders arrived, they found the home filled with smoke -- a burning pillow on the floor and a box on fire in a back room.

According to a police report, the man was sitting in a chair, severely bleeding from his left hand. Officers said he also had injuries on the back of his head.

Police said both the front and back door windows were broken.

According to a police report, witnesses described seeing a man and woman at the home about 20 minutes earlier.

While they didn't want to go on camera, several people who live in the area say what happened there is scary.

Investigators didn't want to go on camera either, citing the ongoing investigation.
