Investigators looking for source of methane gas leak in Girard

Girard firefighters said they found high levels of methane inside of a room at Ohio Valley Waste Service

GIRARD, Ohio (WYTV) – All clear at Ohio Valley Waste Service after there were high readings of an explosive gas inside of a pump room Thursday afternoon.

Girard firefighters said they found high levels of methane inside of that room a little after 2:30 p.m.

By working with the company’s safety crew and engineers, Girard firefighters were able to fix the high readings by venting a hydrant across from the pump room.

“As of right now, there’s zero readings in the building,” said firefighter Jim Petruzzi. “It’s OK for them to use that room. We’re going to leave that hydrant uncapped for the time being, just to make sure that line vents.”

Firefighters said methane is leeching into a recently-installed water line, but they don’t know if it’s coming from the landfill or an underground line.

They’ll be looking into that issue in the days to come.
