Grants awarded to Boardman teachers allow for translating earpieces

Seven Boardman teachers receive mini-grants

Seven teachers were awarded mini-grants from the Boardman School Fund for Educational Excellence.

The grants totaled $8,000.

One of them is for translating earpieces, which allow a teacher to teach and communicate normally in English while a student who does not speak English as their first language receives a real-time translation.

The technology also works in reverse so the student can ask the teacher a question in their native language and it’s translated to English for the teacher.

“The teacher can actually wear an earpiece so they can have a dialog,” said Edie Davidson, president of the Boardman School Fund for Educational Excellence. “It’s very important, very exciting and if it works as we hope it will, it may be something that the district picks up on in the future.”

Each teacher’s submission was limited to $1,500.
