Forfeited land up for auction in Mahoning County

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Parcels of forfeited land that were not sold at a sheriff’s auction are now up for bid through the Mahoning County Auditor’s Office.

The parcel list includes land that was forfeited to the state for nonpayment of taxes.

Six properties are part of the auditor’s yearly sale. The parcels are located in Youngstown, Campbell, Smith Township and Austintown.

“So these are properties which have been foreclosed on, gone through two sheriff’s sales with no bids, so now once a year we have an auditor’s sale,” said Ralph Meacham, CPA of Mahoning County Auditor.

All the auditor can offer is a good deed at the end of the sale.

However, the question is, are these properties even viable?

“That’s a very good question. Usually they’re vacant lots. Sometimes there are dwellings on them. If there are dwellings and someone is occupying, it is up to the buyer to make any eviction,” Meacham said.

The properties were offered to the land bank, but it did not have any interest.

The neighbor’s are also informed, so they can bid.

Opening bids range from $878 to $20,168. If no opening bid is received in the requested amount, bidding will start at $50 and proceed in $50 increments.

All liens and tax liens would be expunged at that point.

The auditor has had up to 30 properties for the sale. It is truly buyer beware.

“Many of these properties are just not of interest to anyone at this point, so that’s why they go to auditor’s sale,” Meacham said.

Bidders must be registered. A pre-registration packet is available on the auditor’s website or interested parties can call 330-740-2010 to request the forms be mailed to them.

Mahoning County Auditor Ralph Meachum said those intending to bid should read over all the forms carefully and closely review the parcels for sale.

“I encourage anyone who may be interested in purchasing a property to review the information on our website as this is a buyer beware sale. The County Auditor does not give any representation regarding possession, eviction, prior inspection, scheduled demolition, health code violation, or any other matter,” Meacham stated.

If the property does not sell, it stays with the auditor and is made available at the next sale.
