The driver involved in a fatal crash in Mesopotamia in June is now in the Trumbull County Jail.
Gilbert Chaidez, 25, of Minerva, was arrested on a vehicular homicide charge on Thursday.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Chaidez was the driver of an SUV that collided with a log truck at the intersections of State Routes 534 and 87.
Investigators say on June 1, Chaidez drove through the intersection into the path of an oncoming truck that was hauling logs. He was seriously injured in the crash, and his passenger, 28-year-old Lindsay Chaidez, died.
The driver of the log truck, who unsuccessfully tried to stop before hitting the SUV, was not injured.
Chaidez pleaded not guilty to the charge in Newton Falls Municipal Court on Thursday. He’s scheduled to appear in court again at 9 a.m. September 27.
