BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) – The National Click It or Ticket campaign to educate drivers about wearing seat belts begins Monday.

Statistics show that people who wear seat belts are 50 percent more likely to survive a crash.

The campaign was underway in Mahoning County on Saturday at the Field of Dreams in Boardman. Baseball teams will spread the word to families attending little league games in the months ahead.

Click It or Ticket also educates law enforcement about the importance of penalizing drivers who are not wearing seat belts.

“A lot of times, law enforcement will just give warnings for people who are not buckled up, but we really want to educate law enforcement agencies to ticket those people. Zero tolerance policy on those people not wearing their seat belts,” said Susan Viars from Mahoning County Safe Communities.

The fine for not wearing a seat belt is about $100.

The campaign runs until June 5.
