CORTLAND, Ohio (WYTV) – The man charged with the hit-and-run death of a Cortland woman was in Trumbull County Central District Court Monday morning.

Russell Lauer, III, 43, appeared for a preliminary hearing Monday where the case was turned over to a Trumbull County grand jury. His bond of $215,000 was continued.Lauer is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident in connection to the death of 27-year-old Brittany Szwedko.

Lauer is accused of hitting Szwedko Feb. 27 as she jogged along Ridge Road in Fowler Township, Police say Lauer left the scene of the accident and was followed by a witness who alerted officers. He was arrested a short time later.

Police said Lauer was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs during the time of the crash.

Szwedko’s family members were in court Monday holding up pictures of the young victim for the judge and Lauer to see.

Lauer pleaded not guilty last week to the charges against him during his arraignment.
