AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Asbestos was found underneath Austintown Fitch High School’s gym floor, which was warped by water from a broken pipe in June.
This discovery means the floor will have to be completely removed and the cost to fix the problem will increase.
The problem started after a water pipe in the women’s restroom broke, covering the floor with two inches of water. The water was cleaned up and the floor dried but two weeks later, the wood became warped beyond repair.
School officials closed the gym for the rest of the summer.
Construction on the new floor is scheduled to begin later this month. The plan is to have the floor replaced and ready to use by October 15.
