CLEVELAND, Ohio (WYTV) – Three Mahoning County men have been charged with transporting explosives to crack safes, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio.
Frank Michael Susany, Jr., 52, of Boardman; Robert Thomas Courtney, Jr., 44, of North Jackson; and James Patrick Quinn, 51, of Youngstown, have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of receipt and transportation of explosive materials, conspiracy and operation of an apparatus to interfere with the transmission of communications and signals.
Investigators say Susany, Courtney and Quinn planned to use the explosives to open safes at jewelry stores and coin shops. They would buy the explosive devices by stealing valuable items from these stores, according to the indictment.
On April 19, 2013, Susany used a device that jammed cell phone communications and store alarm systems connected to cellular back-ups to disable a coin store’s alarm system, according to the indictment.
The charges were a result of an investigation by the FBI, and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David M. Toepfer.
