$1.1 billion energy facility proposed for Wellsville

WELLSVILLE, Ohio (WYTV) – South Field Energy, a subsidiary of Advanced Power, announced plans to build a 1,100-megawatt natural gas facility in Columbiana County on Thursday.

The electric generating plant is Advanced Power’s second project in northeastern Ohio and will be similar to the company’s Carroll County Energy plant, which is being constructed near Carrollton.

The South Field Energy Project is expected to be a significant stimulus for Columbiana County and the surrounding communities, according to a news release from the company. The project represents $1.1 billion in capital investment and as many as 550 construction jobs for up to three years. When completed, the facility will employ approximately 25 full-time employees in engineering, technical, operation, managing and administrative positions, according to the company.

The facility will be located on approximately 20 acres of land about three miles from the village of Wellsville.

“Ohioans face a growing gap in energy production,” said Jonathan Winslow, senior vice president for development at Advanced Power via a written statement. “With facilities like this, we can begin to close that gap by using advanced technology to produce a substantial reliable power, while also minimizing our environmental footprint.”

South Field Energy will utilize General Electric’s highly flexible and efficient gas turbine technology. Becthel, an engineering and construction company working with Advanced Power on its Carroll County energy project, will oversee the project.

The company plans to pursue an Enterprise Zone Agreement to provide money directly to local schools.

Open houses will be announced for residents to learn more about the project in the coming months. This is a developing story. Check back here for more information.
